My story. If you enjoy a bit of a ramble, stick around. I’d recommend you make a cuppa first.
Back in the day, I was a full-time Communications Specialist in a small Internal Communications team for a large bank.
My role mainly involved working as part of a team to produce intranet content, employee communications and company publications. We also organised events and analysed employee opinion surveys.
I loved writing, but organising events? Not so much. So I promised myself that one day I would focus on writing and ditch the stuff I didn’t enjoy.
In the meantime, I had some children, and decided I’d like to spend some time at home with them. Life was good and I assumed that when the younger one entered the education system, I would return to corporate life.
But life doesn’t always go to plan.
My assumption that I would get back to the workplace was challenged when it became apparent that my younger boy was displaying autistic traits. Autism creeps up on you – you don’t find out on the day your child is born that they’re affected. It’s a slow, painful realisation.
The early education years were troublesome and we had to tread the same path that many have walked before us to find the right education. Thankfully, we were able to secure a place in a fantastic specialist school close to our home.
I distinctly remember sitting at my kitchen table reading the first draft of my son’s Statement of Educational Needs, making edits and drafting the response that I hoped would persuade a panel to grant him a school place.
Despite my heartbreak, I experienced a feeling that had been missing in recent years. I was enjoying myself and I remember thinking: ‘I’m good at this’.
Anyone can say they’re a copywriter.
You don’t have to have special qualifications or letters behind your name to trade as a copywriter.
Despite this, I felt that my natural ability to write and internal comms experience were not enough alone to offer a credible copywriting experience.
So I set about retraining as copywriter, in the first instance studying The Complete Copywriter by the Writers Bureau which covered all the basic aspects of copywriting and setting up a copywriting business.
I later went on to complete Breakthrough Copywriting (Andy Maslen) and gain the Inbound Marketing Certification with Hubspot Academy.
I also signed up as member of the Professional Copywriters’ Network who provide guidance and support to copywriters who take the profession seriously. Here’s a link to my profile:
Not quite the freelance dream
So you’ve probably gathered my entry into copywriting and freelance life was a bit different to many stories that you’ve read. I’m not a former marketing manager or agency writer who got made redundant or took a leap of faith into the unknown.
And you will never see a picture of me on a beach with phone in hand promoting the freelance dream. It’s b*ll**ks. I’m reliable, work hard and care about providing a personalised service to my clients.
My business is small. Tiny. I only take on a handful of projects at once and all client work is completed during school hours, so that I can work on your copy free from distraction.
Tell me your story!
I’d love to hear about you. What’s the story behind your business? Get in touch via my Contacts Page and let’s talk about how we can bring your story to life and promote your business through clear, conversational copywriting.
